Types of Assisted Care Facilities

Three phases of care are available to prospective residents of assisted living facilities (adult homes).

Residential Facilities

Adults who need minimal assistance with daily activites (bathing, eating, dressing, taking medication) are placed here. These facilities are often privately owned by large multi-state corporations.

Assisted Living Facilities

Adults who need moderate or a more intense level of assistance with daily activities (bathing, eating, dressing, taking medication) are usually placed here. By law, an assisted living facility must provide staff with specialized training. However, under Virginia law, the state mandates no staffing levels that must be upheld to ensure proper care of tenants.

Nursing Homes

Adults who need full-time health care are usually placed in nursing homes. Nursing homes are subject to much stricter federal and state regulations and must be staffed with nurses. Nursing homes fall under the jurisdiction of the Virginia Department of Health. The state inspectors make announced and unnannounced visits to nursing homes.

All facilties must meet the terms of the federal laws that govern the maintenance and care perimeters laid out in the Older Americans Act of 1965 and the Nursing Home Reform Act of 1987.

The attorneys at the Williamson & Lavecchia, LC are experienced at representing victims of abuse at nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Please contact us at (804) 288-1661 to see if we can assist you.
